small, light, good build quality, not sluggish and didn't have loads of useless software on it to slow it down. Almost perfect!
Wireless and camera were not on by default - i bet the support guys got loads of calls about that. You needed to switch them on via the software switches on the keyboard fn keys.

Steve, Derby, “Well Informed IT employee”
Portable, very light (1KG) yet performs just as well as most desktops - i have office 2007 and Adobe CS3 running just fine on it. My own (vastly higher spec) desktop doesnt see much use any more! Decent size keyboard compared to other portables. Screen is very high quality. included installation of XP is quite clean, didnt feel the need to start it from scratch. Good value for money!
3 Cell battery gives a limited battery life, but 6 Cell is coming (fire at major battery factory affects everyone). Had a critical issue out of the box that would freeze the screen, but this was fixed promptly by a bios later posted by 'TheTechGuys'. Lacks a suitable case as far as i can tell. Fn & Ctrl keys are swapped around compared to a regular keyboard. Wouldnt use built-in speakers for extended periods as they arent high quality (snag some headphones or plug into an external set)

These are excellent machines. Screen size is the minimum to be really practical for people who want "serious" internet access on the move. Tried testing other brands with 8" screens but I would need to carry binoculars with me too! Performance is really good considering the size and spec'. I've now bought two of these ( XP Home) because I need to run specific Windows applications for VPN connectivity etc. As a stand alone I would guess that the *.nix version absolutely flies but alas didn't have that option.
The only negative, but understandable draw back is that battery life isn't brilliant, but, of course, for a unit as small and as compact as this the battery has to be quite slim, thus less capacity. On average a good 1½ hours though

This little PC is an absolutely top notch system. It truly beats the eee pc as it's got a vastly superior screen size, bigger disk, bigger screen and better CPU. I'm really impressed with mine. It's also extremely versatile and can run a number of operating systems lincluding XP, Linux and a popular it perhaps shouldn't!
The Advent 4211 doesn't include a case of any kind. The Del key on mine gets a little stuck if you're not careful. The battery life could be better.

It's just fantastic. The best money I ever spent. You can use it anywhere. I would'nt be without it.
No cd/dvd drive is the only downfall but not really a problem as I bought an external cd/dvd drive and the problem is solved.

Trevor, Brighton, “Musician & IT Professional”
A very good spec with a fairly big disk of 80GB & plenty of RAM 1GB Great value for money. A superb size as I bought it to use on the train during my commute to work. It's a very good quality piece of kit.
It was a hassle to have to update the BOIS to resolve some quirks (such as it was over keen to switch itself off during power up) A very minor issue is the processor (Intel Atom) is not very powerful as I have some music making software that can soon bring it to its knees. However, it's perfect for most applications like databases, spreadsheets, word processing or viewing videos.

Pretty speedy and responsive. Excellent screen, even at low brightness settings. Good keyboard and trackpad. Good Wi-Fi connection speed and reception. Powers all my bus-powered USB HDDs and DVD drives even when running on battery. Lightweight, and attractive styling. Great to have a hard drive to store loads of games, music and videos.
Needed to update bios to fix a few initial problems, but this was simple enough following TechGuys instructions page - not had any issues since. Speakers are fairly tinny-sounding. Doesn't come with a case/sleeve, but more are becoming available now. Battery life could be better, ranges between 1.5 -> 2 hours whilst web-browsing.

firstclass product, can not really fault it at all. lovely feel to the keyboard & trackpad & very fast response on screen. I did a great deal of research deciding on the advent notebook & i would like to say that i now have a network of one desktop, one laptop and one notebook.
none at all really except a lot of other makes seem to be jumping on this bandwagon but they will have to go some to beat this advent notebook

David, Isle Of Man, “IT Proffessional. Loves Gadgets.”
The size and weight is perfect. Keyboard is easy to use.
Took a while to work out how to switch on the wireless networking. The manual loaded onto the hard disk was the wrong one - downloaded the proper one from the web.

Willie, Portsmouth, “Fairly experienced silver surfer.”
Compact, lightweight and much easier to carry around than a 15" laptop, but has much the same capabilities. The lack of a DVD/CD drive is not a major problem. Much cheaper than other notebook PCs.
The small screen size can be an irritation when using some programs. However, the one really bad point is the speakers. The sound quality is appalling. A cheap set of USB speakers will overcome this but detracts from the portability, which is its main advantage.

great size, low weight, bright screen, quick enough, great price, is a worthy successor to my Sony Vaio Good value for money if you want this form factor
very poor battery life, about 2 hours needs a better battery

Lawrence, Cwmbran
So far the product performs well and is suited to my needs, chiefly word processing on the move and a digital photo album. I can't fault its performance.
Not really an issue, but if it is going to have a built in web cam, a built in mike would have complimented it.

I choose this product because of it's size ,weight and portability.I find it easy to use and it's advantage over other small laptops is it's processor, size of hard drive and that it runs Windows XP.I find it good for casual web surfing and chatting online though it is as capable as any laptop. The built in webcam is also a great bonus.Overrall an excellent purchase.
None up till now.

It is just as good as a more expensive laptop, the size is brilliant (not too small just perfect). I love this laptop!
No disk drive - this causes LOTS of problems. Also the charging time is only 1.5 - 2 hours which I thought would be a problem - however it really really gets on my nerves.

Its light and small which is the main attraction to it. Pretty fast considering.
Screen resolution could be higher. You need to download alternative drivers for the trackpad if you are going to do a lot of typing.

Does exactly what it says on the tin. A laptop that is easily transportable with enough features for it's purpose.
Current lack of option to increase battery power. The change to three pin power leads (as opposed to the previous 'figure of eight' leads). This necessitates carrying yet another item.

Very small and lightweight. Speedy processor means not matter how many screens you've got open it doesnt slow. Would higly recommend for anyone looking for an internet laptop. I find it good for online gaming as the applications do not slow the computer even if palying several sites at once.
On/off switch is very sensitive and if you press it for a second too long it starts up then shuts back down again! Screen is very small so can be hard to read some text. Sometimes when running off battery screen just suddenly goes blank when you're in the middle of something.

It's suprisingly fast, for instance it can happily time shift live TV from a DVBT stick. The display is really clear and bright. It actually seems eager to connect to absolutely anything via WiFi and bluetooth. I cannot fault it's performance It is also very cute.

Robert, Durham, “Laptop user since 1991”
Good specification, small and light, decent sized, bright, widescreen display with adequate resolution, good sized keyboard, reasonable speed, runs quiet and cool in operation, 3 conveniently placed USB ports, small and neat external power supply, low price
Appallingly unreliable in operation, screen goes blank frequently requiring restart (which is why I'll be taking this back under warranty - it even did it while I was completing this review which was finished on another computer!); wireless performance poor and weak compared to an Asus EeePC on the same wireless network, losing connection frequently and often causing wireless adapter to become unresponsive and causing complete system lockup; trackpad small and fiddly; battery performance poor (though this is forgivable at this price); although the chassis design is attractive, in use it feels cheapy and tacky so the lack of reliability comes as no great surprise

Small but powerful. Perfect for mobile computing.
Wasn't perfect out of the box. Needed a firmware update to resolve issue where the laptop would often shut down 2 seconds after turning tit on. Wi-fi was very flaky or not working at all until new drivers for it was installed. No more problems after these things were done, but I feel that it should not have been necessary in the first place and would probably have put off a lot of casual users or less computer savvy people.

Mike, Milton Keynes, “seeker of perfect pda”
small but still usable size screen and keyboard. light weight. low temperature operation (compared to EEE my previous mini-laptop). up and running very quickly. styling.
very poor battery life with supplied battery. bulky and awkward power supply (would prefer single unit like a mobile phone supply and connector at the back of the machine. usb ports should be towards the back sides of the machine rather than the front, gets in the way of typing and more vulnerable to becoming unplugged. SD card not flush with the side of the machine when inserted so vulnerable to damage and/or accidental ejection. tech support not as user-friendly as it could be.
03 Nov 2008

It's portable, has a good keyboard, the screen is easy to read and web pages are optimised for the screen size.
The supplied battery only lasts about 1 hour on full charge.
02 Nov 2008
Steve, Hassocks
Good size screen and usable keyboard. The Advent appears to be well put together and solid. Wifi connection always ok, and no problems browsing web or downloading from i-player. Fine for watching video. Built in card reader handy for copying photos from camera when travelling. Very portable.
Battery needs charging after only a couple of hours' use. Scrolling documents not particulalry smooth.
04 Nov 2008
Chris, Kingsbridge, “I have a beard”
Size is just right. Keyboard is excellent for its size, with a good 'feel'. Everything (the computer, bluetooth, wi-fi internet connections) worked perfectly, straight out of the box. The screen display is, literally, brilliant. Sharp, and can be as bright as you will ever need. The supplied software is basic but useful. THERE WAS NO RUBBISH! There were no 'trial versions' that needed uninstalling - this was a nice clean computer.
A couple of keyboard keys are in unexpected places. Battery life is too short - about two hours. Spend another £50 on a 6 cell battery pack, which will give you well over four hours (plus another two from your original battery) and you will have something far more useful.
