A great picture, even before upscaling. Excellent value for money, has at the back practically all the sockets I can think off, and has a modern design, so looks like a more expensive device.
Only fault is the speed of access of the USB port, but that is a minor issue, as it's main function is to play DVDs.

I bought this player because it played divx files which is what I needed so far it has played everything I have thrown at it. The player is slim and lightweight,, seems quiet enough and not not bad to look at, but as its in the bedroom this was not of major concern to me. Overall good quality for the price.
Just one that I find annoying there is no eject button on the remote control and the eject button on the player does seem to take a while before it responds. But minor things for the price I guess

Plays any format (apart from wmv files) as data files straight from the computer via the usb port. If you download movies this is for you. No burning them to disc anymore or converting the format.
None really

USB interface for DivX movies and mp3 is brilliant. I slap in a 4GB flash stick and there's hours of fun.

Best Feature is the USB port and the fact that it uses a HDMI cable to connect to the TV hence showing the Video file in the best possible way. It is really easy to use, with no fancy extras, everything you need. Smart sleek design.
Too light and wide, so when you stack it underneath a heavier/smaller box in your TV cabinet (such as a sky box) you feel you are crushing the DVD player; and it's too wide to put it on top of the sky box because it looks odd.

This DVD player is an absolute bargain. Easily converted to multi-region with a simple set of remote control key commands. It is slimline, quiet and quick to boot up. For the money you can't buy a better player!

excellent file handling - divx etc. Silent dvd operation (it makes my sharp sound like a Jumbo at takeoff)
Slightly flimsy feel -but for the price it would be churlish to expect more.

HDMI port (upscaling to 720p) and playing DIVX files direct from USB
Just one niggly point, the power cable is permantly attached (a pain if when trying to keep the cables tidy

Good price, handles most file formats (very forgiving), takes USB sticks and external hard drives.
The remote is a bit odd, looks upside down (cursor key is at top of control as opposed to the bottom like most remotes) Waits until it sees the DVD before it allows you to see whats on the USB.

It's versitility with file types is very impressive, so the many numerous types of file today - that are very frustrating when trying to work with various components, independent or not, disk or on hardware, chances are it will be compatible with the Philips DVP5980. Image quality of photos are very impressive, as are movie files, clean and crisp. Sound quality is very impressive too, as files that do not have good sound quality seemed to be inhanced using this device. The design of the player adds to the ease of use with functions and usb port on display on the face of the player, all accessible. The back of the player supports a scart port and a HDMI port for better quality provided a HD television is connected, and a digital out, audio out, video out, so can be connected easily to other components of your home. The weight of the product is unbelievably light. This is great value for money and a neccessity in your home.
Bad points would be the text column. Items especially with a long title may not be seen easily as the text column is quite restricted so may be a little bit frustrating if you keep selecting the wrong item. However I must stress, this is a minor problem as when you have selected the item it leads you through to another screen where the item's title can be seen clearly and completely.

I've not had another make to compare it with, but it seems to perform very very well, and it is so easy to set up and use almost 'straight out of the box' Extremely good value for money !!! and have bought another one as a gift.
A bit slow on the loading tray opening, to insert the disc.

On a wide screen tv the picture is small and if y increase the picture y lose clarity.

USB - plays everything, upscales. Brilliant product - extremely pleased.
Takes a while to boot up. When reading off the USB stick, I had a 32 GB stick and took a while to scroll through all my video files.

Nice slim profile. Excellent upscaling. Intergrated with other items very easily.

Great picture quality via HDMI. Decodes Dolby 5.1 surround through my Panasonic TV and it sounds almost as good as the home theatre system I've just scrapped.
Menu options are bit obscure, and when selecting them (e.g. picture settings) you have to close the menu to see what it looks like - it doesn't minmise so you can readjust without closing.

At the start you don't think there is a huge difference in the upscaling, but once you compare your old DVD's closely, you can see more imaging and better sound with this phillips DVP5890. Good upscaled picture, sound, look and price.
No Eject button on remote, but you have to get down there to put the DVD in anyway, so it is no great loss.

looks fantastic, superb price and great that it does all formats inc divx.
Not convinced about the upscaling, and the fast forward is not great, like all philips DVD products

Luke, New Southgate, London, “Computer geek, aspiring audiophile”
This DVD player has (almost) all of the connectivity options you need to connect it to a separate A/V receiver or directly to your television; it's slim and compact and took a minute to set up. The upscaled picture quality is very good. Most of the menu options are clear and it's easy to control.
My biggest gripe was that I was unable to get a raw 5.1 audio stream (Dolby Digital or DTS) to output over HDMI. I have the DVD player connected to an external AV receiver (via HDMI) which I wanted to process the raw audio instead of the DVD player. The menu options for sound were confusing and even though I could get it to output a raw audio stream over HDMI with a bit of juggling of the various settings, it would revert back to its original state after turning off the machine. In the end, the only reliable solution was to connect the video stream to my receiver using HDMI and raw digital audio using coaxial. The only other (minor) points are that it takes a bit of time to initially turn on (about 15 seconds) and an optical digital audio output would have been nice (and would have saved me having to buy a coaxial lead).

Excellent value for money. Plays most file types I throw at it. Good picture quality.
USB port won't power portable harddrives that need their power from the host. Memory sticks work fine though.

John, Bristol, “61-yr old techno geek!”
Exceptionally good quality picture on an ageing CRT TV, even using a SCART connection. Main reason for buying this model was the ability to plug my external hard disc into the USB port and watch all my recorded films and TV programs, which it does brilliantly (note this does need a separate power source, this cannot come from the USB port). Also I trust Philips build quality for reliability and useability. Finally amazing value for money for such a high quality output.
The remote is a cheap and rather limited piece of equipment, but does work. No eject button on remote, but as you need to go to the unit to remove the DVD it really is not that much of a problem. The listing of files using the USB port is very limited too, with all file names truncated to about 8 letters.
